About the Opportunity:

Director of Retail Strategies

The Director of Retail Strategies provides visionary leadership and strategic direction for all retail operations across the organization’s multi-site portfolio. This role is responsible for driving revenue growth, elevating the visitor retail experience, and ensuring consistency, innovation, and sustainability across all retail locations.

The Director oversees retail operations, inventory management, product strategy, visual merchandising, staff training, marketing initiatives, and technology systems, while traveling regularly to sites to support teams, implement standards, and lead continuous improvement. This position plays a key role in aligning retail strategy with the organization’s mission, values, and long-term growth objectives. This position will report to the Chief Executive Officer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive, organization-wide retail strategy that supports mission-driven revenue growth and long-term sustainability.
  • Lead strategic retail sales initiatives, pricing strategies, and product mix optimization to increase profitability and enhance visitor engagement.
  • Identify opportunities for sustainable expansion, innovation, and new revenue streams across existing and future retail locations.
  • Analyze sales trends, inventory data, and visitor behavior to inform strategic decisions and performance improvements.
  • Oversee product development and sourcing strategies, with an emphasis on interpretive, educational, sustainable, and locally sourced merchandise.
  • Guide vendor selection, contract negotiation, and performance management to ensure quality, consistency, and value across all sites.
  • Ensure product offerings reflect regional sense of place and support educational and interpretive goals tied to public lands.
  • Lead visual merchandising standards and initiatives across all retail locations to create cohesive, engaging, and mission-aligned retail environments.
  • Conduct regular site visits to implement merchandising plans, assess store layouts, and provide hands-on guidance to site staff.
  • Continuously enhance the retail component of the overall visitor experience through storytelling, displays, and product presentation.
  • Design and implement a robust, organization-wide retail training program, including onboarding, systems training, sales techniques, customer experience, and visual merchandising.
  • Oversee the development of training materials, standard operating procedures, and best practices for all retail staff.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and performance guidance to the Retail Operations & Inventory Manager and other retail team members.
  • Provide executive oversight of retail systems, including POS and inventory management platforms (e.g., Korona), e-commerce operations, and related technology.
  • Ensure consistency, compliance, and efficiency in retail operations, inventory control, reporting, and financial processes.
  • Collaborate with finance and leadership teams on budgeting, forecasting, inventory planning, and loss prevention strategies.
  • Partner with marketing staff to develop retail-focused marketing strategies, promotions, and campaigns that drive in-store and online sales.
  • Oversee webstore strategy, merchandising, and performance, ensuring alignment with in-person retail operations.
  • Leverage data and customer insights to refine marketing efforts and improve conversion across all sales channels.
  • Travel regularly to retail locations to support site teams, conduct training, implement strategies, and ensure operational excellence.
  • Serve as a visible and accessible leader to retail staff across all locations, fostering collaboration, communication, and accountability.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Retail Management, Marketing, Hospitality, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive experience in retail management, including multi-site or district-level oversight.
  • Proven success in retail strategy development, sales growth, and operational leadership.
  • Strong experience with inventory management systems, POS platforms, and e-commerce operations.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently, including overnight travel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
  • Excellent organizational abilities with a proven track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting established deadlines.
