About the Opportunity:

Fall Intern at the Cradle of Forestry
FIND has an exciting opportunity for a Seasonal Educator at the Cradle of Forestry with a 50 year old non-profit located in Pisgah Forest, NC who promotes educational, recreational and interpretive opportunities about forest and water resources, natural history, and the Cradle of Forestry in America. FIND Outdoors serves approximately 850,000 visitors each year with over 150 educational and recreational programs, special events, and tours, and manages 21 recreation, education and camping facilities in North Carolina, Georgia and Indiana. This intern works collaboratively with Cradle Education Manager, education team, Cradle site managers, and hosts to support the educational mission at FIND Outdoors.  This role will focus on delivering formal and informal education and interpretation to schools, groups and families throughout the year. The successful candidate must have the requisite skills to function in this position and will be held to a high standard for education, customer service and employee relations and will be an ambassador to FIND.

  • Assist in the creation, planning and implementation of programming to visiting area school groups.
  • Facilitate education and interpretation programs and activities in an indoor and outdoor setting to participants of all ages.  These programs range from cultural and historical interpretation of the story of the Biltmore Forest School to various conservation, environmental and forestry education topics. 
  • Facilitate lessons and activities in the Citizen Science Lab within the exhibit hall. Develop and conduct interpretation programs for visitors in the exhibit hall. Maintain and clean interactive exhibits, data collection, and displays.
  • Facilitate sharing data with the public through our website, social media accounts, newsletter and Share Station in the Discovery Center.
  • Assist in planning and implementing special events at the Cradle of Forestry and FIND Outdoors campgrounds.
  • Lead groups on paved and natural trails as interpreter of trail stories and as a guide to observing the surrounding forest and its dynamics. 
  • Create and offer thematic talks as a roving interpreter along the Cradle’s trails. 
  • Assist with staffing outreach booths at appropriate events and expos as assigned.  
  • Provides general customer service and information to visitors.
  • Prepare for school groups and breakdown/clean up after programming is completed. Cleaning duties include the classrooms, conference room, education offices, exhibit hall, and field packs when needed.
  • Assist with the cleaning, care, and interpretation of the Cradle’s animal collections and gardens.
  • Support any other general operations of The Cradle of Forestry.
  • Be a FIND Outdoors ambassador.

  • Combination of college and direct experience in designing and implementing environmental, conservation and/or forestry education programs to various ages in a classroom, nature center/nature preserve or similar setting.  Can also be in-process of higher educational degree.
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills with a strong focus on the creation of lesson plans, activities and public communications through our social media, newsletter and website. 
  • Ability to work closely with the Cradle Managers to provide updated information and quality programming. 
  • Strong service ethic and ability to interact well with people of all ages. 
  • Engaging public speaker and comfortable managing large groups of Cradle of Forestry guests.
  • Knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Southern Appalachians, forest ecology and/or forest management. 
  • Willingness to provide support to FIND Outdoors staff, volunteers, hosts, and interns.

Scope of Work & Expectations
  1. In regards to work schedule, this internship at the Cradle of Forestry will:
  • Be employed from August 20 to Oct 22 2022, part-time, 18 hours per week and includes available on-site housing
  • A typical work week will be Thursday through Saturdays, 8:30 am to 2:30pm, but may be flexed as needed to cover programming requests.
  1. In regards to Education, this internship at the Cradle of Forestry will:
  • Check in daily with the Education Manager about daily tasks
  • Coordinate with Education Team and Cradle Management Team about education programing and events
  • Facilitate programming and maintenance for the Community Science Lab
  • Lead education and interpretation programing for schools, groups, and families.
  • Help coordinate and facilitate activities and events at the Cradle of Forestry and FIND Outdoors campgrounds.
